What is swine flu and how serious is it?

A new strain of Influenza A (H1N1), also known as swine flu, was confirmed in the UK in April and has spread to more than 100 countries around the world.

Although symptoms have generally proved mild, a small number of patients will develop more serious illness.  Many of these people have other underlying health conditions, such as heart or lung disease, that put them at increased risk.

How do I know if I have swine flu?

Flu symptoms can include:

  • fever
  • cough
  • headache
  • weakness and fatigue
  • aching muscles and joints
  • sore throat
  • runny nose

As with any sort of influenza, how bad and how long the symptoms last will depend on treatment and the patient’s individual circumstances.  Most cases reported in the UK have been relatively mild, with those affected starting to recover within a week.

If you have flu-like symptoms and are concerned that you may have swine flu please do not come to the surgery:

Summary Care Records

The NHS in England is introducing the NHS Care Records Service (NHS CRS). This is to improve the safety and quality of your care.  The purpose of NHS CRS is to allow information about you to be accessed more quickly, and gradually to phase out paper and film records which can be more difficult to access.

Boundary Area

We have now received approval from Norfolk PCT to extend our boundary area to include Mundford.  Mundford used to be in our practice boundary area, but due to circumstances at that time it was removed.  We now feel we are in a better position to include Mundford patients without compromising the good service we already offer to existing patients.

Extended Hours

We are now offering extended hours here at the surgery.  The majority of our patients requesting that  we offer additional hours, prefer evening appointments.  Taking this into consideration, we have decided to stay open until 20.30 on Fridays.  This is for pre-bookable appointments only.  The telephone lines will not be operational after 18.30, however the Out of Hours Service will take your calls as usual after 18.30 in the evenings.  This will be available from August 2008.

2009 Patient Survey Results

In July/August 2008, we conducted our annual GP survey.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank the 158 patients who kindly took the time to respond to this questionnaire.

This survey is designed to report on your experience at the practice, and your satisfaction with that experience.  The questions focus on the service element of care, such as access, reception services, waiting times, continuity and communication within the consultation.

This allows us to evaluate current patient experience and satisfaction, and to compare it with National Benchmarks.

Please see below, the summarised report on the outcome of this survey:
